SPS member, Michael Gilles, sent a question to the Society via our Facebook page regarding a pair of jugs he owns, depicting (what we now know) a Victorian British Navy sailor.
Another jug, more than likely produced by Bo’ness, carries the same image, but is unmarked. The Victoria pottery jug, made in Pollokshaws, Glasgow, is marked with a pattern name “Malta”.
It is likely that the transfer relates to the British Mediterranean Fleet, which used Malta as a base dating back to the late 18th century.
A wood cut image was researched, showing the British sailor dress, dating from 1873, with very clear similarities.
